Apollyon, the destroyer

Apollyon, the destroyer

The Hebrew term Abaddon in Greek Apollyon is used in the Hebrew Bible to indicate the destruction or place of ruin and destruction ("the Abyss"), while in the New Testament, to be precise in the Book of Revelation, coupled with its equivalent Greek Apollyon (Ἀπολλύων), is the name of an angel.

The Greek term used in the book of the Apocalypse, Ἀπολλύων (Apollyon), derives from ἀπόλλυμι (apollumi), "to destroy", therefore it means "the destroyer"

In the Tanakh, the term abaddon is used six times, of which four are coupled with another Hebrew word, שאול (sheol, which indicates the realm of the dead):

Naked is the tomb (sheol) before him and without a veil is the abyss (abaddon).
The abyss (abaddon) and death say: "With the ears we heard the fame."
that is a fire that devours to destruction (abaddon) and consumes all my harvest.
Will your goodness be told in the sepulcher (sheol)? Or your loyalty in the place of destruction (abaddon)?
The hell (sheol) and the abyss (abaddon) are before the Lord, the more the hearts of the sons of man.
As the underworld (sheol) and the abyss (abaddon) never get satisfied, so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

In the Book of Revelation Abaddon is treated for the first time as an individual rather than a place:

"Their king was the angel of the abyss whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek Apollion.

Their king was the angel of the Abyss, which in Hebrew is called Perdition, in Greek Exterminator.

The Latin Vulgate and the Douay – Rheims Bible have one more sentence than the Greek text, in Latin Exterminans ("in Latin sterminatore").

Here, Abaddon, whose name is also given in Greek, Apollyon, is described as "angel of the abyss" and king of an army of infernal locusts, which torment all those who do not wear the seal of God "on their forehead.

In an apocrypha called Apocalypse di Bartolomeo, however, Abaddon is present in the tomb of Jesus at the time of his resurrection

In the area of Protestantism, the nonconformist Matthew Henry believed that Abaddon was the antichrist

According to the Mormons, "Abaddon" is one of the demon titles
