Clavicle of Solomon
Solomon, according to the Bible, was the third king of Israel. He was the son and successor of King David. His period of regency is considered by the Jews as the IDEAL ERA, comparable to the Roman Augustan era.
The Key of Solomon or Clavis Salomonis is a text of medieval ritual practice originally attributed to King Solomon
It is surely the most widespread and known magic treatise of the whole Mediterranean area. Its popularity is also due to the fact that it is a real practical manual of magic that accompanies the aspiring wizard step by step: describing how to prepare himself and the tools for magic operations, which formulas to use, of which symbols and seals self-defense, such as conversing with the evoked spirits, and finally what to ask.
The origins of the Clavicula are certainly very old. Many of the ceremonies and rituals described are very similar to those used by the Chaldeans, the Babylonians and the Jews. However, the atrribution of the text to King Solomon is to be considered without a doubt legendary.
The first certain historical quotation of Clavicula dates back to the Jewish historian Josephus, who lived in the first century AD.
Copies in different languages, from French to Italian, from English to German, exist precisely because of its great diffusion. Most of these manuscripts are kept in the British Museum in London or in the Arsenal Library in Paris; others instead are part of private collections or libraries scattered around the world.
Because of its evocative and diabolical character, the Clavicula was forbidden in 1559 by the Inquisition as a dangerous work. Despite this, however, the first printed copy made its appearance in Rome in 1629.
Even today the Clavicle is reprinted, or "small key", known in different versions and in various languages; Less known is the Lemegeton, expressly dedicated to the domain of infernal and / or celestial entities. The last chapter of this text contains a complete ritual for the evocation of angels in charge of the domain of the four cardinal points (called "parts of the world" or "towers").
The Clavicula Salomonis is considered an incomparable grimoire for what concerns demonic evocations: it contains in fact a lot of information on the 72 Demonic Spirits, that is to say their names and degrees, the aspects with which they manifest and materialize, their Seals, etc. It was used by great occultists like Eliphas Levi, Aleister Crowley and Collin de Plancy. There are many manuscript copies, kept at the Arsenal Library in Paris and at the British Museum in London.
