The Necronomicon

The Necronomicon

The Necronomicon is a pseudobiblium, ie a book never written but cited as if it were true in really existing books. The Necronomicon, in fact, is a literary device created by the American writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft to give verisimilitude to their stories, which gradually became an intellectual game when other writers began to mention it in their stories of horror or science fiction. Lovecraft himself was almost forced, at a certain point, to confess that the Necronomicon was his invention when he realized that too many of his readers had taken him seriously; and even today there are no shortage of people who believe in the real existence of the Necronomicon.

The original title of the work was Al Azif, which means "sound of the voices of the demons", but popularly indicates the sound produced by nocturnal insects.

According to Lovecraft, the Necronomicon (Arabic: Al Azif) would be a text of black magic written by the "mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, who lived in Yemen in the 8th century and died in Damascus in mysterious circumstances: Lovecraft imagines that he had been pieces in full daylight from an invisible being. The name Alhazred would be a refined game of words built on the hidden meaning of the English "all has read", or "read everything".

The Necronomicon is an esoteric text divided into two parts: the first part tells of a pantheon of ancient gods, whose cult dates back to the dawn of time (an older religion of both Christian and Jewish, therefore). These gods, led by the main god, Cthulhu, would have come to Earth from the constellation of Aldebaran and would immediately be imposed upon the first human and sub-human populations with an extremely cruel religion that included human sacrifice as a common practice. Later these gods, called "Great Ancients" would have been overthrown by other more powerful gods, then disappeared, called God Major (or Primigeni) - coming from Betelgeuse (Orione) - and imprisoned underground and below the surface of the sea. The Necronomicon would have the power to "resuscitate" these creatures, giving those who do immense powers and at the same time delivering to Cthulhu and his followers the keys of the world again. And the second part of the book would contain the words and spells to do this.
